Brief Description

In remembrance of Irish human rights campaigner Roger Casement, who spent some of his early professional years in Calabar, Nigeria, the Roger Casement fellowship has been established. He was a pioneering human rights defender in Nigeria and, more famously, in the Congo, the Amazon, and Ireland. It has been agreed to fund one Nigerian student’s pursuit of a master’s degree in human rights in Ireland in light of his humanitarian legacy.

Under the Casement fellowship, individuals from Nigeria who wish to pursue a one-year full-time master’s degree program in human rights in Ireland will get complete financial support.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the Fully Funded Irish Aid Casement Fellowship in Human Rights, Ireland 2024-25:

  • Being a Nigerian citizen and residing there
  • possess the academic qualifications required for admission to a human rights master’s program.
  • Have two years or more of experience in the field.
  • Be able to prove a solid dedication to Nigeria’s growth.
  • Be qualified to accept the fellowship during the given academic year.
  • Satisfy any pertinent procedural criteria set forth by the Nigerian government.
  • Be able to prove that they possess academic English proficiency by earning a suitable score on a recognized exam (such as the IELTS 6.5).
  • A candidate won’t be given more consideration in either of the following situations:
    • They already have a master’s degree.
    • They have submitted at least two prior applications for the Roger Casement Fellowship without being successful. (Cases where an applicant withdrew from the procedure earlier may be considered if there were extraordinary or unanticipated causes for withdrawal in that instance).
    • They presently work in our embassies or our corporate offices, or it is predicted that they will do so in the future. Personnel who have previously worked for one of our embassies or posts must wait a full year before being qualified to apply for a fellowship.

  • Three steps make up the application process:
  • Stage 1 is the preliminary application stage, followed by Stage 2 and Stage 3 interviews.
  • Unless they already have an IELTS certificate dated 2022 or later that verifies they have attained the required score for the course(s) they intend to apply to, all applicants who are shortlisted after the interview stage will be required to take another English language test, typically the IELTS exam.
  • Even for natural English speakers, it is highly recommended to start preparing for the IELTS exam early.
